I was born in London and grew up in Surrey. I attended Tonbridge School in Kent, gaining ten A*-grade GCSEs, and four A-grade A-Levels in English Literature, History, Spanish and Art.

I took my first degree at Jesus College, Cambridge from 2004 to 2007, graduating with a double first in English.

I then studied for a Master's degree (pass with distinction) in Environment, Politics, and Globalisation at King's College London, which led to my first job as Communications Officer for the New Economics Foundation, an independent think-tank and research organisation, from 2008 to 2011.

In October 2011, I returned to academia to write a PhD in English at Darwin College, Cambridge, the novels of Samuel Beckett. I completed the thesis in 2014. I have taught undergraduates at Cambridge since 2012, and, in 2014, completed the year-long Teaching Associates qualification, accredited by the Higher Education Academy.

Personal Approach:

My teaching philosophy is student-centred: my aim is always to create a supportive, friendly and exciting environment for learning to thrive. I respond dynamically to the needs of each student I teach, shaping my teaching style so that it best serves their personality and interests.

My teaching philosophy is student-centred: my aim is always to create a supportive, friendly and exciting environment for learning to thrive. I respond dynamically to the needs of each student I teach, shaping my teaching style so that it best serves their personality and interests.

I am particularly keen on making my tutorials as practical as possible. My students are invited to hone their skills in writing, critical reading, research, note-taking, and articulation from the get-go. Through learning how to formulate original ideas and express themselves clearly, my students are able to develop greater confidence in themselves and gain a deeper sense of autonomy and initiative towards their school work.

What I do when not tutoring:

When I'm not tutoring, I am often pursuing academic research on literature, and continue to write and publish articles on Beckett and other authors. I'm a keen hiker and camper, and enjoying finding ever wilder parts of the British Isles to roam around with friends.

My other great passion is mindfulness meditation: I spend several weeks a year in silent retreat at a beautiful former convent in Devon.

11/05/2018: "Thank you so much for being the best English teacher I've ever had. I sincerely mean that. You have truly made me appreciate English for all it's philosophical quirkiness. Now, analyzing English has become a great hobby of mine, versus how unfathomable it used be. Hence, writing Paper 1 and paper 2 was hard, but I actually really enjoyed writing them because I think English is just so interesting and reflective of the morals of human life in general, which is something I love thinking and writing about. Also, thank you so much for being so down to earth and understanding of my initial (and middle and final) difficulties as well as encouraging in a way that none of my previous English teachers have ever been. I am really fortunate and extremely grateful to have had you as my teacher." - IB HL Student

22/11/2016: “Thanks so much for your help so far, it has been invaluable. We're delighted she's got an interview [at Cambridge], I think that the work she did for you [on the ELAT preparation] has made a huge difference. She is finding the sessions incredibly helpful.” – Mother of student applying to read English at Cambridge.

06/10/2016: "He's very much enjoying the sessions with you and has come back with renewed passion for the subject and very motivated." Mother of Oxford applicant to read Philosophy and Theology.

06/10/2016: "I am so happy to see that my daughter is making good progress with your help! She came home yesterday evening and told me that she really enjoyed the lessons! Thank you!" Mother of GCSE student

31/08/2016: "I enjoyed my sessions with Andy and was thoroughly impressed by him. He gave me a solid base of reading to do in my own time, and during our lessons he would throw ideas at me which we would discuss, much like in an Oxford tutorial. This preparation made me feel confident to deal with Oxford's notoriously challenging Philosophy interview. He made what seemed like fusty academic reading lists into living, exciting ideas which could be interrogated and challenged. I can’t imagine receiving the same preparation from any school teacher (indeed I never studied philosophy at A-Level; it isn’t suggested for PPE applications). Andy is an excellent tutor, and he helped me to succeed in my philosophy and politics interviews." PPE Oxford applicant.

25/08/2016: "She really enjoyed your tutorials and always seemed uplifted after them. I am so happy for her improvement I hope it will show her that she can achieve whatever she puts her mind to." (Mother of A Level RS and English student)

25/08/2016: We're thrilled - she got an A* English Lit 91%. She got an A for English language but is 1 mark off A* so may consider remark. All your hard work paid off. Thank you. (Mother of Online GCSE IGCSE student based in Malaysia).

15/08/2016: "The exam went well ! You fired up his interest in Philosophy and it has been so encouraging to see him enjoying his tutorials with you. He was inspired by you to reconnect with his love of literature and thought. I am extremely grateful to you for your input and your tutorials have been very much appreciated". Mother of Edinburgh University Philosophy student.

23/06/2016: "Andy is a fabulous tutor; I really cannot recommend him highly enough. He helped my 16-year-old prepare for her English language and literature GCSE’s, focussing on a range of specific tasks and also improving her general level of confidence. Andy is always thoroughly prepared for lessons; he made a particular point of researching the rather obscure exam board which my daughter’s school sits, so that they could go through past papers together. He was also happy to mark ‘homework’ tests in his free time, for which I was very grateful. He is highly intelligent and – more importantly – he was able to pass that intelligence on to my daughter in a very non-condescending way. I got the impression from her that they were collaborators in learning, which she liked very much. Andy quickly worked out an excellent strategy to improve her analysis of text and to address her lack of structure in written responses. He is always enthusiastic, positive, and reliable. I would recommend him wholeheartedly." Mother of Year 11 student (English Literature and Language iGCSE)

23/06/2016: "Andy is a terrific tutor and I can't recommend him highly enough." Mother of Year 10 student (Critical thinking and writing skills)

04/01/2016: "Thank you so much. I think the sessions with Andy have been a real help, not least in identifying my son’s apparent fears and attitude to learning." Mother of year 7 student.

18/12/2015: "My daughter seems to be getting on very well with Andy and I really appreciate his detailed monthly reports. Her confidence is starting to improve and her English teacher at school has noticed an improvement in her level of work and that she is beginning to develop a more mature style which is obviously required when moving up from GSCE to AS level." (Mother of AS English student)

17/12/2015: "Andy was very thorough and clear. He worked hard and was highly professional. I was delighted with him." Mother of previous student.

30/11/2015: "Andy is terrific. He is enthusiastic and my daughter really enjoys her lessons with him. We will definitely be very sad to see him go, he is such a cheerful chap and we look forward to lessons with him." (Mother of 11+ student)
